Getting Your Website Found in Search Engine Results

Search Engine OptimizationThere are all sorts of ways to get your site ranked higher in search engines. Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay-Per Click Advertising, and many more. These can be very effective and very expensive.  However, to get started there are a few simple things you can do with your website that are fairly easy and are really necessary to get your site listed as high as possible in search results. Keep in mind there is no guarantee that this will put your site at the top of the search results for certain keywords. No, unfortuanately that is based largely on what your competition is doing as well as how well your website's content ranks among search engines. 

We are going to describe the essentials for assisting in getting your site found by organic search results. To assist in making your site more search engine friendly there are several simple things that should be done for your website.  Title Tags, Description Tags and Keyword Tags are three of the absolute musts for each and every page of your website.  These are descrbed below. 

In addition to these tags you should also add as much searchable relevant content to your site's pages as you can. By this we mean your website should contain searchable text that is relevant to your product/service. The more relevant keyword rich content your site has the better chance the search engines will find you. You should also submit your website to the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.

Title Tags
The title tag is one of the most important factors in achieving higher search engine results.  These tags are equally as important as your visible text copy and the links pointing to your pages.   • Include your company name in the title tag
  • Title Tags should contain specific keyword phrases relevant to that pages content
  • If you are doing business in a specific area definately include your city and state in the title tag

Description Tags
The description tag is not as important as the Title Tags when it comes to search engine results, but it is important because it is the text that is typically displayed in search engine listing results. Google pulls the first 20 to 25 words from this tag, but Bing and Yahoo! on the other hand sometimes do and sometimes don't.

Bottom line is you should have a unique description tag for each and every page of your website.  The tag should be in a sentence format and relevant to the page it is describing.

Keyword Tags
Although not as important as Title Tags or Description Tags, Keyword Tags should still be set to each and every page of your website.  Keyword Tags over the years have lost some of their value. They were overused and abused and in turn the search engines decided not to put as much weight on their value.  However they should still be used and used wisely.  Make sure the Keyword Tags you use on your pages are relvent to the page and are not repeated too often within the tag.  The first words in any tag are assumed to be more important, so consider this when adding your Keyword Tags.


  • You can use commas or spaces to separate
  • You can use the same word in differnet phrases, but never use the word more than three or four times in a phrase
  • Never insert the same word twice in a row in a tag
